The Heroes for a Healthy Planet award, an award given annually by the Hitchcock Center, acknowledges a person or organization in our community that has made a significant contribution toward increased knowledge, understanding and stewardship of our local environment.

The Northampton Public Schools is proud to announce that Principal Margaret Riddle and the Faculty of the R.K. Finn Ryan Road Elementary School are the recipients of this year’s award.  They are being honored for their “exceptional passion for and dedication to creating a strong ethic of nature exploration and environmental care in their school.  Inspired by Richard Louv’s book, Last Child in the Woods, and supported through a grant from the Northampton Education Foundation, Margie and her teachers have created a school culture that reminds every teacher, child and parent that the natural world is an exciting and essential part of our daily lives.”

To honor the recipients, a complimentary Salamander Sunday Brunch is being held this Sunday March 27, 2011 from Noon-2pm in the Lewis-Sebring Commons in Valentine Hall at Amherst College.  “All are welcome to join the celebration in recognition of those who make significant contributions to promote an environmentally sustainable planet in our community!”

“Guests will be invited to make a gift in support of the Hitchcock Center’s mission to foster greater awareness and understanding of our environment and to develop environmentally literate citizens.  All gifts will be generously matched by the Kendeda Fund, a national foundation supporting innovative environmental initiatives.”

Seating is limited.  Please RSVP to 413-256-6006.
