Well, winter finally hit us and I have grown to be far less excited about snow days then I used to be. I want to thank everyone for their flexibility with all of the rescheduling. Evening school events, meetings, and Budget and Property were the major realignments, but we all had much more to re-schedule. Just to confirm, we will hold our Budget and Property meeting on Tuesday, March 6th at 6:00pm at the JFK Library and our principals and School Councils will be there to present and advocate for their schools, courses, staffing, programs, and materials.

I offer special thanks to Nathan Ziegler for leading the day-long Educator Evaluation Committee retreat on Tuesday. Nathan and the committee of ten (made up of administrators and teachers) worked on increasing their understanding of the new regulations and drafted our implementation and training plan. Training and communication to faculty will begin in April. Nathan will be sending a draft of the outline soon that I will share with everyone.

The overall feeling of our Budget and Property meeting on Monday February 27th was that of disappointment. However, I have taken the advice of the sub-committee and re-drafted an “educationally sound” budget, worked with ALT on Wednesday to fine-tune it, and will share the draft next week. I’ll speak to Ed Zuchowski. Stephanie Pick, and Howard Moore about how and when to present the next draft.

Also, during ALT we began the discussion of the future of our districtwide literacy program. Many of our teachers are trained and are embracing these strategies to teach reading, yet more training of the science of reading is needed for many teachers and, of course, more leveled books and materials are desperately needed.

Next weekend, I am looking forward to seeing “Grease!” at NHS. I hope some of you can attend the musical at the high school March 8-10.

Sincerely,

Brian L. Salzer, Ed.S.
Superintendent
