July 19, 2012 Weekly musings:

Posted on: July 20, 2012

I am happy to introduce Angelo Rota as our new Director of Innovative Instruction and Technology.  Angelo is an experienced math teacher and technology director who is well versed in using technology in the classroom.   He has an inspirational vision for how we will integrate technology and learning now and in the future.  I am very pleased he will be joining us on July 30th.  Next, we will be hiring for the elementary school technology coordinator and our data coordinator.

The School Committee Feedback Survey for NPS employees is up and active. We are using this to gather input on my performance this past school year.  At the time I wrote these notes, 129 employees have completed the survey.  School Committee members should all have copies of my self-assessment document and I am open for questions or can offer clarification as needed.

I met with David Marks from the Y.M.C.A. on Wednesday to go over the details for our Administrative Leadership Team (ALT) Retreat at Camp Norwich on August 27th.  He has a wealth of experience with team building and trust building activities. He has the day all planned for us from start to finish, so I am sure our ALT will all enjoy and benefit from this experience together.

Speaking of working retreats, Annie Thompson and Tracy Harrity have been working on the final details for our three-day experience July 30 – August 1 at Smith College.  Our new administrators will be joining us for all or part of the workshop.

Our IT team is working hard this summer upgrading our network, ordering new computers, and software.  This work, together with our new technology plan and, hopefully, an allocation from city capital planning in the fall and we will be on our way to building our capacity and integrating current IT strategies into our daily instruction.

Finally, we are continuing to work on bringing our Clarke students into their new Leeds classrooms in September.  Work on the remodeling of the classrooms has been very slow, yet we are reassured by the architect and the contractor that all will be completed on time.  Meanwhile, we are close to having all of the lease contract language in place so we can carry on as planned and bring these two populations of children together.

Sincerely,

Brian L. Salzer, Ed.S.
